Para-Swimming Success for Linkage College Learner

Posted: 12/09/2019

This term Linkage College have welcomed back a newly-crowned S14 para-swimming double gold medallist.

Over the summer college learner Owen Garsides had fantastic success in para-swimming. He now has two English National Championship gold medals to his name, as well as a British Para-Swimming silver medal.

Owen secured the phenomenal golden double at the Swim England National Summer Meet in Sheffield in August. During the event he competed in Multi-Classification races, known as MC races. These are where para-swimmers compete against rivals from different classifications and receive a points score based on how close they are to the existing British record.

In the heat Owen clocked a fantastic three-second Personal Best (PB) making him the fastest qualifier for the final. He then went on to reduce his time by another two seconds to firmly take the gold. With a time of 1.17:95 Owen became the English National Champion in the Men’s MC 100m Breaststroke.

Two days later he reached the Men’s MC 100m Butterfly final. Another gutsy swim and a four-second PB time of 1.04:92 secured a second gold and another English National Champion title.

This brilliant accomplishment followed on from success earlier in the year at the British Para-Swimming International Meet in Glasgow. This meet saw the British Para elite battle it out against the best in the world. Owen made the British Para National Finals in all of his six races securing the following results:

  • 4th place in the 100m Breaststroke
  • 5th place in the 100m Butterfly
  • 5th place in the 200 Individual Medley
  • 5th place in the 200m Freestyle
  • 7th place in the 100m Backstroke
  • 2nd place and a silver medal in the 100m Freestyle.

A huge congratulations to Owen. As with all our learners, we are really looking forward to seeing how he progresses.

I have had a fantastic time at Linkage - 10/10
