Stronger Together

Linkage is leading the development of a Lincolnshire Learning Disability Coalition as an independent body to promote and protect the interests of learning disabled people and their families across Lincolnshire.

We feel that it has never been more important to harness and strengthen the voices of learning disabled young people and adults across Lincolnshire and the voices too, of their parents, carers and families.

We hosted a meeting of interested organisations and individuals on Friday 27th April and we are delighted to be forging ahead with its development.

Please contact Linda Alexander, Policy and Campaigns Officer, if you are interested in becoming a coalition member or supporter, as an individual or organisation. Tel: 01522 507214 E-mail: linda.alexander@linkage.org.uk

When is a choice not a choice?

Lincolnshire parent Sue Thompson’s story was highlighted on BBC Look North on Tuesday (17th April) when she spoke of her distress and concern about lack of choice of Further Education college for her 18-year-old daughter Lucy. Sue has been told that Lucy must attend her local college despite her concerns over their ability to meet her needs and despite her desire for Lucy to attend Linkage College at Toynton.

She is not alone in her situation, as we know from other concerned parents who are in similar circumstances. Please get in touch if this applies to you.

We have also heard from parents whose sons and daughters are struggling in their Further Education placements, so again, tell us if this applies to you.

Parents plead for local authority support for specialist education at Linkage

“It is nothing short of a scandal that such opportunities are being denied.”

Parents are expressing their shock and dismay at the decision of local authorities to drastically reduce the numbers of placements they support for learning disabled young people to attend Linkage College.

Many parents have contacted Linkage with harrowing accounts of their struggles to access specialist education for their family members and heartfelt appreciation of the huge difference Linkage College has made to the lives of their children and themselves. These include parents who want Linkage provision for other family members, but for whom it is not being offered as a choice. Read More...

Respite care at Linkage Community Trust’s accommodation is being extended because of demand.

They were first offered a year ago when Lincolnshire  women Rebecca Shaw and Donna Foxon, who currently attend Skegness Day Centre, stayed at Linkage’s Toynton campus near Spilsby on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. The service is now attracting a growing clientele,  and a special open event this month aims to promote respite care to a wider market. Read More...

Fulfilling Potential.

The students and service users of Linkage Community Trust, along with their families and supporters, have made clear to the Government that disabled people need real choices over their education, care and employment if disability equality is to be realised. This includes the choice to access specialist education, the choice to access work or purposeful activity that is meaningful and the choice to choose the type of care they receive, backed up with fair and appropriate funding. Read More...
